TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 13 BETTING PREVIEW
This stage features a series of rolling climbs on their way to the first and second intermediate time checks of the day. Anyway, this ITT is a course for powerful riders and time-trial specialists. The more punchy Côte d’Esquillot is the biggest hurdle - a 1.1 kilometres climb at almost 8% - but in the last few hundred metres the riders hit a 17% ramp.
The parcours is fairly flat, which should mean Julian Alaphilippe will struggle to defend his yellow jersey. He was three and a half minutes slower than Thomas in last year’s time-trial, though then he did not have the carrot of the maillot jaune to pull him round.
Geraint Thomas is by far the best time trialist of the GC contenders this year and is only trailing the Frenchman by 1:12. Bookmakers have installed the Brit as second favourite to win the time-trial.
Stage 10 winner Wout van Aert won a very similar time trial at the Critérium du Dauphiné in June, making him the top favorite for Friday. The Dutchman finished that race 31 seconds ahead of Tejay van Garderen with Tom Dumoulin another 18 seconds further behind.
Rohan Dennis abandoned the race on Thursday in mysterious circumstances while other great time trialist - Chris Froome and Tom Dumoulin above all - are not competing at the Tour this year due to injuries.
The American Chad Haga won the individual time-trial at the Giro d’Italia in May and should be in the mix, as well as the four-time world time-trial champion Tony Martin.
Michal Kwiatkowski is capable of a decent time trial performance, as is Jonathan Castroviejo.
Dark horses?
Kasper Asgreen, Soren Kragh Andersen, Stefan Kung, Wilco Kelderman, Yves Lampaert and Steven Kruijswik all have a top 3 placement ambition.
